Well there’s no better way to start a new trimester than to start a new project in AP Lit. This week, Schoenborn introduced our new SSR projects to us. We will be creating Pecha Kuchas to present the books we have read over the trimester as well as our topic and theme to go along with our two books. I think it’s a different but more fun way to reflect on what we’ve read than simply just writing a paper. I chose to read Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov. I chose this book because it has been on my To Read book list for at least a year or two. I’ve heard so many great reviews on it. I also chose the book Strait is the Gate, also known as La Porte Etroite by André Gide. I’m not entirely sure if I’ll find this book, or even if it is an AP Lit level book as I only found it under a recommended list when i was looking at the book, The Stranger. If i either cannot find it or it turns out not to be an AP Lit book, i will choose to read Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. The topic I chose is Love vs. Lust. I chose this topic because love and lust are often mistaken. Lust has been one of the seven deadly sins since the late 6th century. Even today, although there is more recognition of the powerful feeling and the knowledge that it is not the same as love, people still fall victim to it and mistake it everyday.
On Wednesday, we took an example AP Literature and Composition test. I received 30 out of 55 which obviously was not my best test ever. How I took it was I would cross out answers which I knew were not true and narrow down my options until I could make an educated guess, unless I absolutely knew the answer, in which case of course I would just go with the right answer. One thing I took away from taking the test is that I really need to work on my vocabulary. I need to study terms and phrases like circular reasoning, mendacious, and syllogism. I think it’s important to have a wide vocabulary, not only to use in essays and conversations, but also because you are limited in how well you can take tests depending on your range of vocabulary. I’m apprehensive of the AP test looking at my score from Wednesday, however, now that I know what to expect, I am optimistic that I can improve my score by studying.
