This past week was a filled with creative writing and working in groups to finish writing our summer reading group essays. We’ve also been listening to the usual poem of the day. I personally enjoy this part of the class because I like listening to and trying to analyze the poem in my head as it’s being read.
Every other day, the class takes about fifteen minutes to creatively write. As a student who wants to go to college to be a creative writer, I find this part of class especially helpful. I’m still getting used to not deleting mistakes that I have written. I’m actually pretty bad at that part of it and need to start kicking the habit. However, besides that, I think I’m doing pretty well. Everyday we get a different optional prompt to write to. Usually they’re college application essay prompts. Sometimes I write to them, other times I’d prefer to write something that I think of off the top of my head. But I do find the college app prompts useful, as it helps me know how and what to write for my actual college app essays.
After we finish our creative writing or SSR, the class splits up into our assigned groups to work on our summer reading group essays. Like last week, this helps with learning to work as a group as well as working as an individual within a group. We also learned how to properly peer edit. Our student teacher, Ms. Josephine, gave us tips on how to edit each other’s essays. The tips included: are your ideas clear? What is the focus/purpose of the paragraph? Did you organize paragraphs clearly? Can the reader identify the main idea? I found these tips ever useful while I worked on another group’s essay.
