One of the things we learned during week two was how to analyze a poem. Mr. Schoenborn calls the analysis TP-CASTT. It stands for Title, Paraphrase, Connotation, Attitude, Shifts, Title, and Theme. For how much I love poetry, I’ve never really thought about how to analyze it, at least not properly. I’ve always tried to connect to poems personally and find a hidden meaning but besides that, I’ve never searched for anything more. TP-CASTT breaks the analysis into several different parts that helps make it easier to understand. Had I not followed the steps, I would have interpreted the poem, “The Eagle” as a poem about power. After using the TP-CAST process, I interpreted the poem to be of something about pride and loneliness. I still need to work on being patient with the text and letting the meaning come to me, rather than over attempting to fish one out of an uninhabited pond. But other than that I’d say my understanding of this concept would be a solid 9/10.
Another thing we learned this week was how to work together as well as how to work independently within groups. In continuing our summer reading book reports, my group with Erica Davis and Sophie Grossnickle is learning useful it can be to write a paper with more than one person. Though the paper is a group effort, we are also working independently on specific paragraphs to finish the job more efficiently. I’d say we probably still need to work on splitting the work more evenly, though none of us seems to have a problem with just picking up and editing a part we find necessary.
