As per usual, this past week we analyzed another poem; Bright Star by John Keats. I personally liked this poem a lot. It took me some time and a few extra read throughs to fully comprehend it but that was okay. Not everything needs to be understood the first time as it is the same way in life. As we analyzed the poem, we learned a new literary term, apostrophe. This type of apostrophe means that the poem is being narrated by someone as if they are talking to the object or person described in the poem as if they can or will respond. I thought that the apostrophe in Bright Star was effective because it got the point of the fact that the narrator was so in love with the “Star” across in a way that just describing the star may not have. We also tried to relate to the poem by identifying ourselves with either the narrator, the person the narrator is talking to, or the star itself. I personally identified most with the narrator because I write love poems as well and could envision myself reading this to someone I loved.
We also started our What is Literature - and How Do You Write About It? projects. My partner is Sophie Grossnickle and we chose characterization and symbolism as our literary elements to study. As a writer, I found it helpful to read about characterization and analyze how to properly develop characters as you write. I learned about direct and indirect characterization, as well as flat and round characters and static and dynamic characters. Although I learned these four terms last year, I found it interesting to read more in depth about them.
