With the start of this week we started to watch the Shakespearean plays that we each picked to watch; King Lear or MacBeth. Of course, being written in the 17th century, the play was a tad bit hard to understand, at least in my opinion. I had a basic understanding of the entirety of the plot and what was going on. It was just difficult to understand the details of each scene and what exactly was being said.
King Lear was about a King who gives away his land to his daughters depending on how much love they proclaim to him. His third daughter told him, she would not play that game and suck up to him, because he should know how much she already loved him. He then banished her from the kingdom and gave all of his land to his two other daughters to split. Eventually, everyone in the play becomes power hungry and goes round the bend. I thought it was an interesting way to show that someone can do just little things for you but they still love you all the same. Because it is about your actions and not just your words.
I did not however enjoy the ending, as I don’t with most of Shakespeare’s plays. Nothing was resolved, as most things are not in his works. Everyone went crazy, everyone died, no one got any land, it was a mess. What will the kingdom do now with no one in power? Way to go Shakespeare, you’ve created havoc to be in an imaginary world. Despite the ending, I did thoroughly enjoy the play. Until last week, I had never even heard of it so it was nice to watch and learn about it. Shakespeare sure knows how to write tragedies, that’s for sure. I do think it had a good message though.
