Emmy VanderVeen learned how to read in kindergarten. Some people learn how to read by studying menus or watching fleeting road signs or tracing the text in books with their fingers as someone reads to them. VanderVeen learned by looking up words in the dictionary and having them read and sounded out to her. There are various reasons behind why people read. In this day and age, few people read for enjoyment. Many read for information. Others read to socialize and stay updated on day to day activities. Most people read to educate themselves. Education never ceases. People are constantly learning, with every letter, newspaper, or blogpost that they read. In order to be a good reader, it is wise to keep an open mind and to read things that pique particular interests. VanderVeen finds it easiest to read when she can find text that not only piques her interest, but also teaches her something new or broadens her horizons. VanderVeen loves reading so much that the only difficult thing for her is reading only one book at a time. The books she reads mostly include science fiction, poetry, fiction, fantasy, and some classic novels. VanderVeen usually chooses books for their take on society, their character development potential, or intricate realistic challenges and how the characters face those challenges so that she can open her eyes to how things could be. She tries to read every night and definitely during the day, even if it's just a few pages of poetry. To VanderVeen, reading is an essential part of life. If you have an allergy, you must read ingredients. If you need to learn how to do something new, you have to read the directions or instructions on how to do it. Reading is an irreplaceable key ingredient to living in the world we do.
VanderVeen learned how to write in kindergarten. However, the base of her writing career is thanks to her late teacher Mrs. Jansen, who taught her how to write creatively. People write to be creative, even ask a politician. But in all seriousness, people write to express their feelings, share information, communicate, and share stories and experiences. In order to do this well, it is important to stay curious, keep an open mind, and never give up your thoughts and opinions for ransom. Inspired by Mrs. Jansen, VanderVeen indulges in writing poetry, fiction, and science fiction. It's never hard for her to decide what to write. She writes about her life experiences, usually things that are going on in the present or events that had a tremendous impact on her life. When it comes to fiction or science fiction, the best way to describe how she gets her ideas is from when she attempts to put herself in other people's shoes in their own situations and wonders what maybe going on in their lives. Her favourite response to her writings is constructive criticism. Although compliments are nice, she always enjoys feedback that she can use for her writing in the future or for editing. As a poet, VanderVeen tries to write about two poems a month, depending on their length. When she lacks inspiration, again she likes to try to put herself in others' shoes and see life from their eyes. VanderVeen would definitely label herself as a people watcher and often tries to understand where people are coming from and their background. As an author, she tries to write a chapter about every three months depending on writer's block. For the most part, VanderVeen is confident in her writing. She reads enough poetry and fiction and has studied it so much that she knows what she likes and doesn't like from a piece and writes accordingly.
