New year, new poems. We started the new year by springing into some new poems, literally. The poems were about the beauty that spring brings. I thoroughly enjoyed the first poem especially, Spring and All by William Carlos Williams, because of its emphasis on new birth. I liked how it was like a metaphor for life and how it reminded me of babies being born, fresh and new, being welcomed to the world. The very first line, “By the road to the contagious hospital” made me think; it contains irony because hospitals are usually thought to be very safe, sterile places, but when you think about it, they are also the home of lots of death and sickness and pain. It seems even the safest place one would think to be could also be another’s hell hole.
In this new year we have also been working on our Shakespearean drama essays. My group has also been revising our critical theory proposal and cornell notes to get a better grade, since you are allowed to go back and fix things to get the best grade that you possibly can in this class.
On thursday, Dr. McDermott from CMU came in to talk to us about Shakespearean dramas and her experience with them. She also gave us advice on our papers and where to take them from where we were so far. I think she helped a lot and I really appreciated the time she offered us. I think my group really found out what exactly we wanted to say in our essay after she talked to us.
